MECHANICS OF PROGRESSIVE COLLAPSE:

What Did and Did Not Doom World Trade Center and What Can We Learn?

Tuesday, October 13, 2009
2:30 p.m. Refreshments
3:00-4:00 p.m. Seminar
Room W102-D Engineering Building 1, UH

Professor Zdenĕk P. Bažant
Northwestern University

ABSTRACT: The collapse of World Trade Center (WTC) towers on 9/11/2001 was not only the biggest mass murder in the U.S. history but also the biggest surprise to structural engineers since the Tacoma Bridge collapse in 1940. After reviewing his original simple analysis submitted on 9/13/01 and the far more detailed analysis of the fire zone at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), released in 2005, Bažant will outline his theory of progressive collapse. Introducing the proper distinction between the crush-down and crush-up phases of progressive collapse, he will show that the gravity alone suffices to explain the observations if the inelastic buckling of columns, the comminution of concrete floor slabs upon impact and the work to expel air are properly taken into account, and in particular that: 1) there is no disagreement of the calculated total duration of collapse with observations; 2) the solution of the differential equation of progressive collapse is in perfect agreement with the motion history identified from video records and also the with seismic record, which rule out free fall; 3) the tilting of the falling part is easily explained and accounted for; 4) the speed of ejected air must have created a boom and spread dust far away; 5) creating all of the pulverized concrete (~20% of total) found on the ground required about 10% of the gravitational energy of each tower converted into kinetic energy (and would alternatively require about 225 tons of TNT); and 6) the distribution of particle sizes of pulverized concrete agrees with Schuhmann’s law of comminution upon impact. The results reconfirm Bažant's original conclusion (9/13/2001) that collapse driven solely by gravity was inevitable because the plastic-fracturing energy absorption capability of the steel frame was only about 12% of the initial kinetic energy of the upper part of tower set in motion by viscoplastic buckling of columns, many of them damaged and rapidly heated because much insulation was stripped during aircraft impact. All of the claims of controlled demolition by planted explosives, recently advanced by lay critics of the 2005 NIST report, are thus proven to be false. Finally, Bažant will argue that, with a certain kind of precise remote monitoring of building demolitions, inverse analysis based on the proposed energetic theory of progressive collapse could be used to extract valuable information on the energy absorption capacity in various collapse modes. This would allow rating the performance of various types of structural systems subjected to extreme fire, blast, impact, earthquake and terrorist attack. Finally, Bažant will briefly comment on the lessons learned from the collapses Malpasset Dam and of prestressed record-span box girder bridge in Palau.

BIO-SKETCH: Educated in Prague (Ph.D. 1963), Bažant joined Northwestern University in 1969, where he has been W.P. Murphy Professor since 1990, and simultaneously McCormick Institute Professor since 2002. He was inducted to US National Academy of Sciences, US National Academy of Engineering, Am. Academy of Arts and Sciences, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Italian National Academy (dei Lincei, Rome), Spanish Royal Acad. of Engrg., Lombard Academy (Milan) and Czech Engrg. Academy; received six honorary doctorates (Prague, Karlsruhe, Colorado, Milan, Lyon, Vienna); Hon.Mem. ASCE; ASME Timoshenko, Nadai and Warner Medals; ASCE von Karman, and Newmark Medals, SES Prager Medal, and many other honors, and authored six books (Scaling of Structural Strength, Inelastic Analysis, Fracture and Size Effect, Stability of Structures, Concrete at High Temperature, and Concrete Creep).  He is ISI Highly Cited Scientist (top 100 in Engineering), and an Illinois Registered Structural Engineer.  www.civil.northwestern.edu/people/Bazant.html <http://www.civil.northwestern.edu/people/Bazant.html>

KBR Presents at General Meeting

IEEE's first general meeting was on September 9, 2009 from 11am to 1pm. There were more that 50 students and 4 representatives from KBR present. The meeting proceeded quite well where the engineers from KBR gave an indepth presentation about their industry and the type of work they perform. KBR's representatives were very pleased with the quality and quantity of the students that were present. This meeting, which was one of the largest meeting IEEE has had, helped KBR to promote itself to the students. IEEE intends to continue to have large and sucessful meeting with company representatives in the future.

KBR is a leading global engineering, construction and services company supporting the energy, hydrocarbon, government services, minerals, civil infrastructure, power and industrial markets. The company is a leader in many of the growing end-markets it serves, particularly gas monetization, having designed and constructed, alone or with joint venture partners, more than half of the world's operating liquefied natural gas (LNG) production capacity over the past 30 years. KBR offers a wide range of services through its Upstream, Downstream, Technology, Services, Government and Infrastructure, and Ventures business segments.

UH IEEE New Trifold

Advertisement is a must for any organization. IEEE has created an original tri fold board that displays our works of the past, events of the present and plans for the future. Our board is equipped with two digital photo frames that are able to present our photos in a slide show format. The board also has short descriptive paragraphs that briefly explain all the programs that IEEE organizes and executes; some of which are the Electronic Racer, IEEE’s Annual Chili Cook-off, and Robotics. The board also has a section that is dedicated to our corporate sponsors, because without them we would be nothing. This wooden tri fold board is very durable and is expected to last us for the years to come. All the information that goes onto the board is velcroed down so the information that is displayed can be interchanged at anytime. This robust, innovative, high-tech tri board is the perfect way to advertise the excitement and dedication of our IEEE chapter.

Marvel vs Capcom Tournament:
BOS Party 09

IEEE kicked it off at the Beginning of Semester party hosted by the Cullen College of Engineering on September 17th 2009 with a Marvel  VS  Capcom tournament for all of the students. The event was a great success.  It was organized and run by an IEEE committee consisting of Major Jomah, David Aguilar, Ted Nguyen, Andrew Luu, Vidal and Solideo.

We had twenty five students entered the competition that ran on 5 different arcade consoles. The consoles that were used were custom made by some of our very own alumni (Thomas Packer and Paul Dinh). Thomas and Paul donated the consoles to IEEE after they saw how much fun we were having with them. IEEE would like to thank them, the committee that ran the event and all who entered. We look forward to doing this again in the future.

IEEE Region 5 Conference Results

At the Student Robotics Competition at the 2008 IEEE Region 5 Conference last weekend in Kansas City, there were two ECE Sr. Design teams that entered. Both teams had superior robot designs and performed quite well.

In particular, one of teams (UH Team 1: Nicole Stewart, Dustin Reynolds, Anita Shah, Akshaya Koshy) was in first place after the first two rounds, going into the final round.  In the final round, the can the robot was carrying rolled 45 degrees and thus did not fit into the destination box.  They ended up in 5th place overall.  It was clear to all there that if they had completed the round, they would have placed first, having the fastest robot at the competition.  Their design and performance were recognized at the
awards banquet with a special award for the robot with the Best Design/Technology.

The other team, UH Team 2 (Lahiru Jinadasa, Wolly Ekanyake, Jhonny Feng, Kalpesh Patel), had an excellent design, and their robot was fast.  The robot was plagued by processor reset problems and did not make it into the final round.  I can tell you, however, that it was a top five robot when it completed practice rounds.

We are proud of all who participated, especially our own 2 UH IEEE Officers who participated, Akshaya Koshy and Anita Shah.
